Looking for a Home?

Renting[...cont.]

How do I move to another of the Association’s properties?

You may decide to move house for a number of reasons:

  • Perhaps there aren’t enough bedrooms for all the family
  • Perhaps the property is too large because the children have by now left home.
  • Medical reasons and because it is necessary to adapt the property because of health or disability reasons.
  • You need to move house because you have been given a job in another area
  • You need to move house in order to receive support from your family
  • You are the victim of violence

If you do decide to move house, the Association can help you in a variety of ways.

Exchanging with another tenant

You are entitled to exchange your house with another tenant within the Association, another housing association or local authority as long as the house is suitable for them. You must get written permission from the Association before exchanging with any other tenant.

Exchanging with another tenant could be an effective way of moving home and we could assist you by advertising your home on our web site, office notice boards or in the tenants’ newsletter, ‘Taro’r Post.’

Should you hear of another tenant wishing to exchange with you, your Housing Management Officer must firstly call to inspect your home. If your home is in an acceptable condition and your rent account is clear, you may proceed with the exchange.

Should you exchange with another tenant without receiving permission, we may take legal action to evict you from the property. We also have the right to prevent exchanges in other ways:

  • If you have any rent arrears
  • If you have made improvements or alterations without written permission
  • If you have damaged the property
  • If we are already taking legal action against you, such as an application for a possession order as a result of rent arrears.

We can also prevent exchanges if we feel that the property you are moving into is unsuitable for you.

You should not do any of the following:

  • Offer or accept money or any other incentive to encourage an exchange. Should you do so, we may take legal action against you.
  • You and the tenant you intend to exchange with should receive the property in the condition it is in at the time, including all fixtures and fittings. You are responsible for repairing any work undertaken by the tenant that you are exchanging with.

The Association will not be responsible for any decorating work on your behalf when moving in and will not provide an allowance, or any other materials towards the cost of redecorating.

Transfers

If you wish to move to another home and at the same time wish to remain a tenant of Cymdeithas Tai Eryri, you can apply for a transfer. There are certain conditions which you can discuss with your Housing Management Officer. Ask for an application form and a copy of our transfer policy in your local office.

Mobility Scheme (HOMES)

If you have to move to another part of the country to live, we can help you move through the Government funded HOMES (Housing Organisation Mobility & Exchange Service) mobility scheme. This is a scheme where housing associations and councils nominate applicants for suitable property in other areas of the tenant’s choice. For more information, contact your local office.
